Leaving Ireland, 3.4.2011

Today I was just picking up some stuff from a friend who is leaving for the US of A next week with his wife. As he got a company to ship his life to the USA he was also talking to the Guy who was doing the moving. That man said, that their business - which is one of the the ten biggest moving companies in Ireland - has only within their company an increase of 1500% percent business volume for 2011 in comparison to last year. In real figures means, that they do 15 times more work than they used to.

He had arrived on my friends place with an 18ton truck - and was doing another 3 jobs on that day alone. Apart from the fact, that so many people - majority Irish - are leaving is one thing. But the ones who are leaving, are the ones who have a job - mostly in the US of A. The ones without a job (probably still with a mortgage, believe or not) CAN NOT afford to leave, because they couldnt get the money for a ticket (no more cheques from some auntie in Phili or Boston or Chicago, i wonder why....).

When I had a conversation with my landlady earlier, she was pointing out, that when her husband was 6 or 7 (in the 1970s) he could cycle on the mainroad near our house. You couldnt do that now as it is a very busy road. When their 5 month old daughter will be that age, she said, she wouldnt allow her to do that. To which I just replied - in 6 or 7 years time, there wont be that many cars on the road anymore anyways. That comment didnt go down too well....

What do ye think?
